Planet Sub Custom Salad

Today's lunch is not a burrito or sandwich. I have been eyeing the salad at Planet Sub for awhile and today I pulled the trigger. They have 3 standard salads in which you can customize. They also offer a large and a small version. I chose the Garden Salad which included Romaine Lettuce, Red Onions, Tomatoes, Sprouts, Banana Peppers, Mushrooms, Croutons, and Dressing Choice. When you order you can customize the meat/vegetable you want to add. You are limited to options that they offer for sandwiches. There are no carrots, broccoli, or hard boiled eggs for example. Not a bad salad for about $7. Check out the menu.

Chicken Coop Sports Bar & Grill

Stopped by the Chicken Coop Sports Bar & Grill in Urbandale for some lunch. The Chicken Coop is very similar to a Okoboji Grill or Legends. They offer a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, dinners, and deserts. I usually judge a place like this based on the cheeseburger. However a friend told me that they had recently stopped by for a burger and loved it. So I ordered the pork tenderloin with fries. The sandwich was served hoagie style. The pork tenderloin was cut in half which I thought was quite brilliant. The bread was soft and allowed the whole sandwich to come together with out splitting the top bun from the bottom. I loved the use of the clausen pickles and setup was fresh. One of the best pork tenderloins I have had in quite awhile. I did not count the many televisions which are hanging throughout but seems a great place to catch the game. Check-out the West Des Moines Location as well.

Jethros BBQ for Breakfast

Jethro's has been serving some of the best barbecue in the Des Moines area. On Saturday and Sunday they open up at 9:30am for breakfast. Recently I heard that they started to serve breakfast and really hungered to check it out. As I thought they do have more than your typical breakfast items with twists of smoked ham, brisket, pulled pork, and bacon. The breakfast menu features omelets with barbecued meats, breakfast plates, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, Texas toast size breakfast sandwich, and a large burrito. They even have a huge 16 egg ham and cheese masterpiece. Breakfast menu below.

Game Day Breakfast pictured above. Our made from scratch biscuits and gravy, Texas style hash browns (that's topped with chili and cheese) and 3 eggs any style. $10.95

The game day breakfast was good but a bit odd for my taste. The chili and cheese hash browns really did not fit with the sauge gravey and biscuits. The hash browns were tasty on their own and I could of ate a whole plate of them. So stop in for some breakfast- but come very hungry.

Buzzard Billy's Des Moines

Will the NEW Buzzard Billy's be worth a visit? I decided to get my cajun on check the place out.

I visited this restaurant many times when it was located downtown on Court Ave. and have many fond memories before the flood. The restaurant is now just south of Wells Fargo Arena between 2nd and 3rd. Parking here could be very tricky with any events at Wells Fargo Arena. However it is not impossible if don't mind walking a few blocks.

The menu is packed full with appetizers, cajun dishes, salads, and sandwiches. The menu is listed below.

I could not help not trying appetizer to get things going. I immediately jumped on the Cajun Popcorn for $8.99. Crawfish tails hand breaded and deep fried to a golden brown. They were served with homemade remoulade dipping sauce. Very good.

I chose for dinner "The Bayou Platter" for $12.99. A small blackened chicken breast, a half order of red beans and rice, a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo, and a couple hushpuppies. Everything was delicious. Would of liked more chicken and less red beans and rice.

Overall the ambience and service was great. Great place to catch the game and meet up with friends. This place is a keeper.

Waveland Cafe for Breakfast

If you are looking for breakfast anytime of the day, I strongly recommend the Waveland Cafe near Drake University. This is the local diner that everyone has come to love for great food and service. I met a friend for breakfast and thought this would be a perfect place to catch up. We arrived at 6am along with a few other patrons. While he ordered I quickly glanced at the menu. They offer your traditional goodies and a few breakfast skillets that you will not find anywhere else. They claim to have the best hash browns in the galaxy and my friend would agree. We both ordered the "Breakfast Special" for about 8 bucks. Two eggs anyway you want them, the famous hash browns, choice of meat, and two slices of buttered toast. Delish! Arrive early or brave the wait. By 7am the place was bustling with friendly conversations and orders.

Today's lunch is The Planet Sub (Yello Sub)™ from Planet Sub in Johnston. They offer assortment of sandwiches, salads, and soups. Perfect for a light lunch to someone that is starving. The "Planet Sub" is a sandwich made up of Ham, Roast Beef, Turkey, Bacon, Swiss, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Brown Mustard, and Mayo. I added jalapenos and red onion. As of late I am hip on order online and they do have that option. Great for a quick grab and go lunch. Wednesday is double punch day so if you like free food it is a great way to get on your way to a free 6" sub fast.

Big Melt Bacon Burger

Red Robin has a new burger and it's loaded with bacon. This new fire-grilled burger is topped with four slices of bacon, cheddar and swiss cheese, mushrooms, and onions sautéed in barbecue sauce, crisp lettuce, ranch dressing, and served on a onion bun. A very delicious burger.

Got to love B-Bop's. It has been voted several times as the best place to get a hamburger. They have a double drive-up and no indoor seating. In the summer you can dine on the patio and listen to 50's music. They serve hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, sloppy joes, pork tenderloin, and shakes. Norwood Inn Hot Sausage Sandwich

Probably one of the best Hot Sausage Sandwiches is served at the Norwood Bar and Grill on the east side of Des Moines. This is a large sandwich that could be split by 2. It is 2 quarter pound patties of hot sausage with mozzerella on a hoagie. You can add hot peppers, pickles, onions, and a marinara sauce. I went sauceless with hot peppers. This little neighborhood Bar and Grill has great service and delicious food.

Tasty Tacos - Originals

Tasty Tacos mexican restaurant is a long-time favorite in the Des Moines area. You order your food at the counter and they call you number when it is ready. The selection of options range from tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and nachos. They also have many side options from spanish rice, tasty tators, onion rings, and chili cheese fries to name a few. Mix and match your favorites as all items are sold a la carte.

The most popular is the "Original" flour taco. The "Original" consists of seasoned ground beef and bean mixutre, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and all placed in freshly fried puffy flour tortilla.
